The government of Botswana has decided to allow farmers to preserve their pristine wildlife, and not engage in agriculture. Thus, they will be able to attract tourists by creating small natural parks with wild animals, says Voanew.com.
As President Mokgweetsi Masisi said in a televised address to the nation, Botswana’s tourism sector needs support after the severe impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
“In order to revive Botswana’s tourism sector, government shall accelerate initiatives aimed at stimulating local and international tourism by creating an enabling environment for increased investment in the tourism sector, in particular citizen participation,” he was quoted as saying.
One of the important measures, he said, will be the development of ecotourism destinations. The guidelines for agritourism and hunting management will also be revised. The new rules will allow Botswana who are interested in the conservation of wild animals in their fields to develop these areas, subject to the established criteria.
Tourism makes a significant contribution to the economy of the South African state: almost 100 thousand people are employed in the industry.
The impact of quarantine measures taken to combat COVID-19 was devastating, a significant part of the population was left without work.
