Unusual flowers have appeared on the asimina tree in the Dendrarium Park. Its buds outwardly resemble tulips with a diameter of up to 4.5 centimeters and emit a terrible smell of rotten meat. This aroma attracts beetles and flies for pollination.
"The flowering of the asimina lasts about three weeks. The flowers with an unpleasant smell will be replaced by very tasty fruits. The tree usually bears fruit in September or October. The pulp of a ripe asimina fruit is rich in fructose and sucrose, as well as trace elements. It tastes like a banana or mango," - сообщили в Сочинском национальном парке.
Asimina is widespread in North America. In the wild, it grows on loose and moist soils in forests, on the banks of rivers, often forming dense thickets. The black tulip tree was introduced to Spain, France, Italy and Japan. In Russia, it is represented in the collection of the Sochi Dendrarium Park.
