Birds began to fly away from Moscow for the winter

The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that the seasonal migration of birds began in Moscow. Only one hundred of the 270 species that live in the capital of birds remain for the winter. The rest go to Africa for the winter.

Specialists observe and mark migratory birds. The data obtained helps to make adjustments and corrections to the bird departure calendar. The first this year to go to warm climes were black swifts, which left their homes in August. Since they winter in southern Africa, they have over 9,000 km to cover.

As daylight hours shorten and the amount of food decreases, insectivorous birds fly away. Among them are the common cuckoo and the river tern. At the end of August, nightingales, warblers and warblers fly south. In early September, swallows, flycatchers, some types of waders and other birds take over.

By the beginning of October, waterfowl will also go to warmer climes: shoveler and cracked teal. Following will fly birds that can eat plant food. They are starlings, finches and most types of thrushes.

Gulls and mallards will be among the last to fly away in late October - early November, although the latter often winter in Moscow. In October and November, flocks of wild geese can also be seen over Moscow, which also travel south rather late.
