Antarctica will mark the 200th anniversary of its discovery at Bellingshausen Station, located on King George Island (Waterloo) on January 28. According to the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, the Admiral Vladimirsky and Yantar oceanographic research vessels of the Russian Ministry of Defense will approach the region of the Antarctic station to participate in celebrations.
In 2020, to mark the event it is planned to hold about 30 events at the federal level and about 500 events in the regions of Russia.
In January 2020, a monument to Thaddeus Bellingshausen was erected at the Antarctic station. In addition, the round-the-world expeditions of the Admiral Vladimirsky and Yantar oceanographic research vessels, the Pallada, Sedov, and Kruzenshtern training and sailing vessels are dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reported that this year an international scientific and practical conference is planned under the auspices of Roshydromet, as well as Antarctic Day in the Artek camp.
As part of the events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica, several projects will be implemented covering the activities of polar explorers on the southern continent.
In particular, the projects “Preservation of memory” and “Polar Odyssey” suggest the popularization of expeditionary and research activities of Russia in the Antarctic. Distinguished researchers of Antarctica will be awarded state and departmental awards.
Undoubtedly, an important event of the year will be the launch of the construction of a new wintering complex at Vostok station comfortable for work and leisure.
Thematic exhibitions and conferences, creative contests, lectures, round tables and other events are planned in the regions of Russia, the Ministry of Natural Resources noted.
