Ancient building resembling a Gothic fortress to be restored in Orenburg

The state examination of project documentation and the results of engineering surveys of the Orenburg region issued a positive conclusion on the work to preserve the cultural heritage site “Building of the guardhouse of the mid 19th century. 

The historic building is located in Orenburg on Naberezhnaya Street. Today it houses the expositions of the Museum of the History of Orenburg.

“The building, reminiscent of a medieval Gothic fortress, was built in 1856 for the archive of the Orenburg Governor-General Vasily Alekseevich Perovsky. But a year later, the plans of the mayor changed, and in one part of the building-"fortress" they placed guard duty, and in the other - cells for violators of military discipline of the Orenburg garrison. So the archive building became a guardhouse, and in this capacity it served until the 70s of the XX century. In 1978, the Museum of the History of Orenburg was opened here,” the Glavgosexpertiza says.

The project to preserve the monument involves strengthening the foundations, eliminating defects in stairs, ceilings and roofs, and replacing the interior decoration of the premises.

“In the updated interiors of the museum, it is planned to place the exhibition halls “History of a medieval castle”, “Russian modern”, “Foundation of Orenburg”, “Peasant war”, “Interior of an Orenburg resident”, “Orenburg through the eyes of A.S. Pushkin” and other thematic collections of exhibits ", the Glavgosexpertiza says.
