The place for it is determined between the territories of the park "Roev Ruchey" and the national park "Krasnoyarsk Stolby". Here, young snow leopards will be trained to hunt, and subsequently released into the wild in the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve.
Thus, experts want to stop the extinction of this rare species at the northernmost border of its habitat. Now the number of snow leopards in Russia is catastrophically small. According to experts, no more than 90 snow leopards remain in our country. The population has drastically declined in recent decades due to poachers and declining prey.
The press service of the government of the Krasnoyarsk Territory reported that in 2018-2019, a male and a female from Tajikistan were transported to the territory of the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve. They successfully adapted and already in 2020 brought offspring in the form of two kittens of different sexes. Now small predators have already grown up and have determined their individual habitats.
Currently, six snow leopards live in the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve. Currently, options for creating breeding stock are being discussed.
Aksu female may become the first "mother" in the future snow leopard breeding center. She was delivered to Krasnoyarsk from Tajikistan in 2019. The big cat's paw was broken by a trap. In the Krasnoyarsk park of flora and fauna "Roev Ruchey" she underwent an emergency operation. However, she will no longer be able to survive in the wild, but she feels comfortable in an aviary.
Last year, Aksu was taken to the Perm Zoo with a male snow leopard, where she will stay until the end of this year. Future kittens will be returned to Krasnoyarsk, where by that time there will be a large equipped enclosure for the semi-free keeping of snow leopards.
