In the Irkutsk Region, a new forest was planted on an area of over 15,000 hectares. According to the Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz), the reforestation was carried out by the forestry employees manually or mechanically, and this work is called artificial reforestation.
Rosleskhoz said that a ranking of the regions that carried out the artificial reforestation in Russia in 2020 was compiled, and the Irkutsk Region ranked first. The rankings were based on the absolute data on the actual reforestation areas.
The Krasnoyarsk Territory ranked second with 10.700 ha artificially reforested. The Tver Region ranked third, where 10,000 hectares were reforested.
Also, the Vologda Region (8,926 ha), Leningrad Region (8,921 ha), Republic of Karelia (7,800 ha), Republic of Bashkortostan (7,200 ha), Khabarovsk Territory (6,700 ha), Sverdlovsk Region (5,900 ha), and the Udmurt Republic (5,500 ha) are among the top ten leaders.
In comparison with 2019, the leader remained unchanged, the Irkutsk Region ranked first in 2019, too. The Krasnoyarsk Territory showed the greatest positive dynamics. According to Rosleskhoz, it ranked seventh in 2019.
The artificial reforestation is carried out within the framework of the federal project “Forest Conservation” as part of the national project “Ecology”. In total, the forest was planted on 194,000 ha in 2020, which is by 18,000 ha more than a year earlier. Last year, the total reforestation area, including the combined reforestation and the one supporting the natural reforestation, amounted to almost 1.2 mn hectares.
