The Paanajärvi National Park is located in the north of Karelia. Part of the natural area is a network of tourist routes with a total length of 190 km.
The press service of WWF Russia said that the arrangement of trails makes it possible to reduce the anthropogenic load on the ground cover and prevent park guests from deviating from the route. This is necessary in order to reduce the likelihood of trampling the mosses and lichens that make up the diet of wild reindeer.
Ecotrails also allow the national park staff to tell visitors about the fragility, uniqueness and beauty of the ecosystems of the northern taiga forest and tundra.
Preparations for the construction of the trail began in March of this year. Since mid-June, the construction of wooden decks has begun at the places where the Astervajärva ecological trail passes through damp and swampy areas. In total, 500 meters of decking were built during the summer months.
About 7,000 tourists visit Paanajärvi every year. Two-thirds of the guests walk along the trails in the summer.
About 90% of visitors follow the eco-trail to the Kivakkakoski waterfall. This is the most accessible route for travelers. Therefore, the load on this trail is especially high. Last year, with the support of supporters of the World Wildlife Fund, 1 kilometer of the popular route was updated.
You can see the plant in the Dendrarium Park. Due to the fact that its flowers change color during the day, hibiscus is called the lotus tree or "crazy rose."
