The Norwegian city of Andenes will have a new point for the observation of whales, says Dorte Mandrup. The structure called The Whate created in the shape of a whale’s tail is located just 300 meters away from the Arctic Circle, on the very shore of the sea. It is said to be one of the best places in the world to observe these animals.
The building has below and above water spaces – inspired by the whales' journey around the globe.
The design is projected in such a way that you can walk along the curved “whale back” while enjoying the views of the Norwegian Sea. The roof will be covered with natural rough stones mined in the region.
The lower part of the structure will be equipped with large panoramic windows that open to the Svalbard archipelago. The exhibition inside The Whale will curate a meeting between whale and human, nature and culture.
In addition, the building will also house offices, a cafe and a shop, and a network of paths and viewing platforms will be carefully planned around the building.
The project is expected to help attract more tourists to Northern Norway and create a positive ripple effect for the development of other enterprises in the North.
