A large landfill of solid household waste (MSW), located six kilometers from Pereslavl-Zalessky in the protected area of the Pleshcheyevo Lake National Park, the Yaroslavl Region, has been eliminated. This was announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia on its website.

"The Pereslavl landfill was formed on the site of a spontaneous landfill, which grew over 60 years to a large landfill. Garbage storage was carried out without observing waste disposal technologies. The landfill was closed only in 2017. The landfill, located surrounded by forests, three kilometers from the Nerl River and a kilometer from the settlement of Krasnaya Selo, had a high negative impact on the environment," the report says.

As a result of the elimination of accumulated damage, 1.6 million cubic meters of waste of hazard classes IV-V were neutralized, more than six hectares of disturbed lands were restored.

"Thanks to the implemented project, the landfill has stopped bothering local residents, and the ingress of harmful substances into groundwater has been prevented. Positive changes have affected almost 40 thousand residents of Pereslavl-Zalessky and Pereslavsky districts," said Deputy Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources Murad Kerimov, quoted by the agency.

The work was carried out under the federal project "Clean Country" of the national project "Ecology".
