In 2023, in the Pskov region, clearing of the Pskov River and Lake Peipus will begin as part of the Ecology national project, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reports on its website.

As a result of the clearing, environmental conditions will improve for more than 260,000 residents of the region.

“The water bodies of the Pskov region, which have become part of the Ecology national project, are sources of drinking water supply, a habitat for rare fish species. Not only locals, but also visitors love to relax on the shores and water area. Lake Peipus-Pskovskoye has a special status - it is a transboundary reservoir, the state of which we are monitoring together with our colleagues from Estonia,” said Natalia Sologub, deputy head of the Federal Water Resources Agency, quoted by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

As noted in the message, since the middle of the last century, the state of the lake has been deteriorating. The reservoir with a unique ecosystem has been assigned the highest category of fishery value. Over the past ten years, the site has been cleared twice - in 2010-2011 and in 2017-2019.

“In 2023-2024, the activities of the Ecology national project are planned near the settlements of Podborovye, Podoleshye, Ostrovtsy, Raskopel and Spitsino, where pollution, clogging, depletion and degradation of the reservoir are recorded,” the ministry said.

As for the Pskov River, the abundance of aquatic vegetation there negatively affects the flow rate and oxygen saturation, and the sediments of silt and sand - at a depth. In the area of the Finnish Park and at the beginning of the Krasnogorsk embankment of Pskov, the areas are heavily swamped. The channel is littered with emergency trees and debris.

The Pskov River will be cleared for more than seven kilometers within the boundaries of the regional center.
