The mayor of the capital of Tatarstan, Ilsur Metshin, announced at a session of the City Duma that the concept of "Kazan - a city on the water" has been developed, according to a message on the official portal of Kazan.
“Developed water infrastructure for mooring ships, events on the water and sailing are guaranteed to increase the tourist flow, provide additional opportunities for the development of small and medium-sized businesses, and also attract investment in the city’s economy,” the portal quotes Metshin.
According to the mayor, a lot of work has already been done in the city to improve public spaces, but the coastal areas have yet to be put in order.
“The length of the banks of the Volga River within the city is almost 78 kilometers, and only 0.5 kilometers have been landscaped. The length of the coastal strip of the Kazanka River within the city is 56 kilometers, only 4.2 kilometers have been landscaped. Historically, the inhabitants of Kazan are very closely connected with the river and have a need for recreation near the water,” Metshin said.
He also said that this year it is planned to launch a cycling route along the Kremlin dam.
According to the head of the city, 3.6 million tourists visited Kazan in 2022, which is 20% more than in 2021. The average hotel occupancy was 65.2%, and on holidays it reached 95%.
“Inbound tourism not only revitalizes the city's economy, but also becomes an investment in the human capital of our city. Having stayed in a comfortable, safe, developing city, you will definitely want to return to it, and then move forever,” the mayor noted.
