"The main objects of winter route counts are the background species of Kamchatka, such as the hare, sable, fox, wolverine, wolf, elk, otter, lynx. The state of populations of animal species that do not have a conservation status reflects the general ecological situation on the territory of the Kamchatka Territory," - the message says.
The press service said that the results of winter field studies are included in the Chronicle of the Nature of the Kronotsky Reserve. This annual publication reflects all the changes taking place in the protected areas and scientific discoveries.
The results of the inventory will also be provided to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, of which the Kronotsky Reserve is a member.
Winter route counts of animals have been carried out in the Kronotsky Reserve since 1967. Researchers calculate the number of animals from their tracks in the snow. Data obtained from all areas of the biosphere reserve are processed according to a special technique developed back in the 1930s of the last century. This method of estimating the relative abundance of the main animal species is considered the most reliable and is widely used in Russian nature reserves.
