The Victoria Falls will risk losing the world heritage site status if the governments of Zimbabwe and Zambia develop a golf course, lodges and a hydroelectric dam near the renowned tourist destination, the United Nations has warned.
It earned its world heritage site status in 1989.
Africa News quoted the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which recently visited the Victoria Falls for five days, as saying in a report that the "inconsistency in the use of precise boundaries and buffer zones" with regard to plans by the neighbouring countries.
It also recommended that the building of a 300-bed hotel complex on the Zambian side be stopped.
Harare had been inviting investors to help develop the infrastructure in Victoria Falls with an objective of achieving a city status.
Victoria Falls is the world’s largest sheet of falling water.
