Scientists estimate that up to 90 percent of coral reefs may disappear in the process of global warming. As EcoTourism Expert came to know, this is the result of exposure to a hotter climate, say the biogeographers of the University of Hawaii.
Researchers have designed how changes in oceans will affect coral habitats over the next 10 years, taking into account various factors: sea surface temperature, wave energy, ocean acidity, environmental pollution, and overfishing.
Findings from the study suggest that most coral reefs are under serious threat and 70 to 90 percent of this ecosystem will disappear within the next 20 years. By the end of the 21st century, coral habitats may vanish at all.
Unfortunately, the conclusions made by the scientists are very disappointing. In their opinion, the measures taken by mankind to preserve corals, in particular, the cleaning of beaches, the fight against ocean pollution, are not sufficient. This ecosystem may disappear as a result of global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. The only thing that can save corals is the fight against climate change.
