The Red Book representative of the goat subfamily was first caught in camera traps on the "Land of the Leopard".
The press service of the National Park "Land of the Leopard" reported that the video with the image of the Amur goral was recorded on the "Deer Cliff". Previously, this mountain had the name "Iman", which is from the Asian word "iman-yan" meaning goral. In 1978, an expedition was organized in these places to search for the goral, which revealed only indirect signs of the presence of this animal here.
“The video shows a lone Amur goral walking along a rocky slope. The animal has a gray-brown coat, a long tail and curved horns, which can be judged that this is an adult female about 4-5 years old,” the message says.
Scientists hope that new footage will help determine the number of gorals. This animal is rare not only in Russia, but also in the world. The species is listed in the International Red Book as "Vulnerable". The total number of these representatives of the goat subfamily is not known to science. The Russian population of these extremely secretive animals is fragmented into small groups, one of which lives on the “Land of the Leopard” in the southwestern part of Primorye. Gorals are known to live in extremely hard-to-reach rocky places.
Scientists expect to continue research and install more camera traps. Gorals, like leopards, can be distinguished by individual characteristics, which is important when counting their numbers.
