The Tunisian government is looking at ways to reduce the consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict on the country's tourism sector.

Tourism minister Mohamed Moez Belhassine said several flights from Russia to Tunisia were cancelled since the conflict began in late February.

He said his ministry had established a crisis unit whose main task is to monitor the effects of the conflict on the North African country’s tourism.

"The crisis unit is in direct contact with most of the tour operators in Russia and Ukraine as well as in eastern and central Europe," Belhassine was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

He said the Russian market was essential for the growth of the Tunisian tourism sector.

At least 630,000 Russian tourists visited Tunisia in 2019.

However, the number dropped to 90,000 Russian visitors from 2020 through 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
