The next Nevsky International Environmental Congress is scheduled to be held in St. Petersburg on May 22-23 of next year. This was announced by the Chairperson of the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, at a meeting of the organizing committee for the preparation of the event.
She noted that the congress has been held for sixteen years and interest in it is constantly growing. According to the speaker, if in 2008, 700 people from 17 countries took part in the event, then the participants of last year's, the tenth congress, were already one and a half thousand guests from 52 countries.
"And, of course, we must constantly raise this bar, actively attracting colleagues from all over the world - experts, scientists, government and public figures - everyone who is ready to discuss current environmental problems on an equal, fair basis - without politicization, dictation, and pressure," Matviyenko added.
She emphasized that the issues of effective management of natural resources and environmental protection are among the country's key national priorities.
"Russia has a lot to share with foreign colleagues in terms of environmental legislation, projects to eliminate accumulated harm, and in many other areas," said the speaker of the upper house of parliament.
Matviyenko also reminded that a new national project "Environmental Well-being" will be launched in Russia next year.
The organizers of the Nevsky Congress are the Federation Council, the government of Russia, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology, and the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Member States of the CIS. Traditionally, it is planned to be held in the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg.
