Tunisia’s tourism revenue grew 6% year-on-year to TND 1.2 billion ($389 million) in the first quarter of 2024, according to Agency Tunis Afrique Press citing data released by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).
The North African country received 8.8 million visitors in 2023, a 49.3% growth compared to the previous year.
Tunisia’s share of tourism in the gross domestic product (GDP) was 3.2% in 2022 from 4.5% in 2019, which shows the negative impact of COVID-19 travel restrictions.
The pandemic slowed the share of tourism in GDP to 1.7% in 2020 and 2% in 2021.
Tunisia introduced a visa-free policy for Chinese travellers last year as it seeks to tap into the recovering Asian giant’s outbound tourism market.
