Indian tour operators could lose about $ 0.5 billion due to a fall in the number of guests from China and other countries because of an outbreak of coronavirus. According to the most conservative estimates, if the infection is not managed within a year, the losses will amount to $ 2 billion.
E.M. Najeeb, vice president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators said that thousands of orders have been canceled. The state-owned airline Air India canceled flights to China and Hong Kong until further notice, while the private airline IndiGo suspended its flights until February 20, which immediately affected the tourist flow.
In 2018, more than 280 thousand visitors from the China visited India, and although the number did not exceed 3% of 10.6 million foreign visitors in India, they were among the ten most spending nations.
According to the Indian Association of Tour Operators, more than 50,000 Chinese tourists were expected to arrive in January-February 2020, but most of these reservations were canceled.
