Tourist trips to French Polynesia have been suspended since Wednesday due to the coronavirus pandemic, local authorities said.
From now on, entry into the territory of the French overseas community is allowed only for family, medical and professional reasons.
It is expected that the decision of the authorities will deal another blow to the economy of Polynesia, whose main source of income is the tourism industry.
Despite the fact that the epidemiological situation in Polynesia is improving, up to 300 cases of COVID-19 are still diagnosed there per week.
Any traveler going to Polynesia is required to take a coronavirus test three days before departure, and to be retested four days after arrival.
Before the crisis, France and the United States were the main suppliers of tourists to French Polynesia, which received less than 75,000 travelers in 2020, compared to almost 300,000 a year earlier.
