Three types of orchids from the Red Book of Russia were found near the production site of the Bystrinsky Mining and Processing Plant in the Trans-Baikal Territory, TASS reports citing the press service of the Big Scientific Expedition.
Scientists of the Big Scientific Expedition, which is being conducted by the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Norilsk Nickel company, said that they are now conducting research on the biodiversity of terrestrial invertebrates and vertebrates.
“Together with that, three species of orchids were found that are in the Red Book of the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Red Book of Russia,” said Yury Bazhenov, a senior researcher at the Chita Institute of Natural Resources, Ecology and Cryology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, whose words are quoted in the message.
Earlier it was reported that the expedition members found a high number of Siberian roe deer near the Bystrinsky Plant, which indicates a low impact of the enterprise on wildlife.
Bystrinsky Mining and Processing Plant is owned by Norilsk Nickel.
Also, 16 species of other birds, common for the Gazimuro-Zavodsky district, were recorded in the surveyed area. Scientists explored 80 kilometers along 12 routes at different distances from the plant.
