A presentation dedicated to the second stage of the Big Scientific Expedition of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Norilsk Nickel took place at the site of the scientific and educational center "Reserved Embassy" in Zaryadye Park in Moscow. The experts summarized the results of the research and discussed the participation of business in the conservation of biodiversity.
Scientists, in particular, assessed the company's impact on biodiversity and identified areas of impact. They concluded that the radius of the impact zone of the Norilsk Nickel objects was up to 10 km in terrestrial ecosystems.
In addition, experts studied the behavior of heavy metals in rock dumps, clarified indicators for calculating an integral indicator of the state of ecosystems and adjusted the zones of environmental impact of objects. The data obtained will be used in the publication of scientific atlases and other publications. In addition, the results will form the basis of a corporate biodiversity impact management system, and will also be used in the development of Norilsk Nickel conservation programs.
During the event, experts presented further plans related to solving problems of biodiversity conservation in the Trans-Baikal and Krasnoyarsk Territories, as well as in the Murmansk region.
The joint expedition of Norilsk Nickel and scientists started in 2022. Last year, more than a hundred scientists from various scientific organizations of the country took part in it.
