The press service of the reserve reported that scientists have summed up the results of winter route counts of the main species of terrestrial mammals on their tracks in the snow. Monitoring took place from mid-February for a month. In total, state inspectors and employees of the scientific department of the reserve covered about 390 km.
The number of tracks of one kind or another per 10 km of the counting route was used as an accounting indicator. At the same time, specialists recorded only fresh traces. The counts were carried out along permanent long-term routes, near cordons and between active field stations.
Specialists noted a stable number of Kamchatka sable at the level of about 3,000 individuals and a record number of foxes - more than 2,300. Scientists attribute this increase to a large number of hares.
