The arrival of foreign tourists to India and tourist spending in the country showed decline in the last decade of 2019. According to the Ministry of Tourism, in 2019, about 10.89 million foreign tourists visited the country, only 3.1% more than a year earlier. In 2018, the figures grew by 5.2%, and in 2017 - by 14%.
The decline has been recorded over the past 10 years, but it has reached its minimum level, experts say, due to two factors - extensive protests against the new citizenship law in the country last year and very high levels of air pollution in northern India, including Delhi. It is the smog that frightens travelers, according to the reports in mass media.
At the same time, the situation remains volatile, therefore in December at least seven countries, including the USA, Great Britain, Israel, Canada and Singapore, recommended their citizens to refrain from visits to India, especially to the northeastern region, where there were massive protests against the new citizenship law.
