The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that scientists from the Zhiguli nature reserve in the Samara region will record the sounds of bats. This accounting method will allow not only to determine the number and density of bats, but also to determine their species.
Special devices will be installed on trees in the reserve. Scientists will change locations every 7-14 days. Sounds will be decoded using a special program.
The report notes that today 15 species of bats live in the Zhiguli Reserve. Eight sedentary species remain wintering, three of them are Red Book species, and six migratory species are noted in summer. In recent years, the number of bats in the reserve has stabilized. About 33 thousand bats arrive for wintering.
The scientists also plan to study the “life” of bats with the help of camera traps, which they will install in nest boxes. Experts want to study the behavior of bats in colonies in more detail. They are formed at the time of pregnancy of females after hibernation.
In addition, scientists will capture bats in order to take genetic material for research on family relationships in brood colonies. All captured animals will be ringed. This measure will allow to monitor individually the condition of each individual throughout its life.
