This year, about 20,000 events are planned to be held as part of the Water of Russia campaign. For the tenth year in a row, one of the largest environmental initiatives brings together millions of people in the country. The anniversary season of 2023 officially starts on May 12 on the Don River in the village of Starocherkasskaya, Rostov Region. This is stated in the message on the website of Roszapovedtsentr.
“Several hundred people, including the leadership of the subject and heads of federal authorities, will come out for a general cleaning of the banks of the Don,” said Ilya Razbash, director of the Center for the Development of the Water Management Complex and leader of the Water of Russia campaign, quoted by Roszapovedtsentr.
In addition, more than seventy protected areas will take part in the Water of Russia campaign this year.
“Volunteers in branded outfit will clean up the Volga, Baikal, Teletskoye and Pleshcheyevo lakes, the shores of the northern and southern seas, and many other water bodies that are part of federal protected areas. The action will "get" even to such a remote and hard-to-reach territory as the Commander Islands," Roszapovedtsentr said.
One of the significant events of the action will be the "Green Marathon - Water of Russia". It will take place on Volga Day, May 20, on the eve of the tenth Nevsky International Ecological Congress, and will unite all 49 regions of the river basin. Subbotniks, combined with the eco-race, will be held in many settlements, and the center of the event will be the capital of Chuvashia - Cheboksary.
The All-Russian action for cleaning the banks of water bodies from debris "Water of Russia" is part of the national project "Ecology". The campaign has been held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation since 2014.
As noted in Roszapovedtsentr, today “Water of Russia” is the largest volunteer environmental project in the country, which has already united more than 8.5 million people. In 2022 alone, more than 1.3 million volunteers took part in the project's Eco-Subbotniks, who held about 22,000 events. The geography of the action includes all regions of the country. Volunteers have cleaned more than ten thousand reservoirs, and the amount of waste collected last year alone exceeds 150 thousand m³.
In addition, every year the project hosts many environmental lessons, lectures, contests and competitions.
