The mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, announced in his official blog about plans to improve the Aquarium garden, which is a kind of green foyer of the Mossovet Theater on Bolshaya Sadovaya Street.
"Since we are talking about a cultural heritage site, we will approach the landscaping with special care – the familiar appearance and layout will be preserved. But at the same time, the garden will become more modern and comfortable," the blog says.
According to Sobyanin, as now, a wide convenient promenade will lead from the entrance to the garden to the theater, but the old concrete tiles with chips and cracks will be replaced with granite. The colonnade in the antique style with figures of the muses Thalia and Melpomene will be cleaned, and the grotto adjacent to it with a mini fountain in the form of a Gorgon Medusa head will also be put in order.
"A large fountain with a bronze sculpture of Apollo is waiting for renovation, the fountain in front of the theater is a Satire with Pan's flute. And the fountain is a stream that connects all the others into a single complex," the mayor said.
The territory will be additionally landscaped - 3.2 thousand different shrubs are planned to be planted in the garden. A new lawn and flower beds of perennials will be laid out there.
Additional benches and urns will be installed in the shade of the trees. The park fence, which appeared in 1975, is an integral part of the ensemble, it will also be put in order.
At the entrance to the Aquarium, front lanterns in the historical style with lamps resembling antique gas lamps will be installed. More than 50 similar lanterns will illuminate the entire garden space.
"In addition, several video screens will be installed near the entrance, on which scenes from the performances will be broadcast. And the existing lightbox posters in the park will be replaced with new, more modern ones," Sobyanin said.
Electric lines powering lanterns, video screens, lightboxes and landscape lighting will be placed underground. Rainwater drainage is also being upgraded.
"By autumn, this small cozy green corner of Moscow will once again appear in all its glory," the mayor of the capital said.
