Chile's tourism sector is expected to show a significant drop. According to forecasts, in the high season - from December to March - the tourist flow will decrease by 38.2%.
The National Federation of Travel Companies (Fedetur) said that this decline could be due to social and political unrest in Chile, as well as the economic crisis that swept Argentina, which is Chile's main inbound tourism market, says Xinhuanet.
According to Fedetur, from December to March, a little more than 1.28 million foreign tourists will visit the country, which is the lowest figure since the global financial crisis that damaged Chile's tourism in 2009-2010.
In the last five peak tourist seasons, Argentina ranked first among the number of tourists visiting Chile (6.26 million people). It was followed by Bolivia (918.5 thousand tours), Brazil (750.7 thousand people), Peru (about 702 thousand people) and the United States of America (approximately 505 thousand tourists).
Chile is famous for its national parks, reserves and natural monuments. They are protected by the state and occupy an area of 14.5 million hectares, which is 20% of the entire territory of the country.
