“The conference will discuss the implementation of the waste reform in the Arctic, the state environmental policy of Russia in the Arctic, as well as issues related to the conservation and development of marine and coastal ecosystems,” the Ministry of Natural Resources reports on its website.
According to experts, the Arctic ecosystem is highly sensitive to anthropogenic impact and recovers very slowly after intervention.
“Currently, interest in the environmental problems of the Arctic is extremely high. The key problems of the Arctic zone include the peculiarities of handling industrial and consumer waste, the presence of marine debris and microplastics. Microplastic pollution is recognized worldwide as a threat to marine ecosystems, habitats and wildlife, and has now reached remote areas, including the Arctic Ocean,” the ministry said.
The conference will be held at the site of the Northern Arctic Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov in Arkhangelsk.
