This was stated by Sergey Hvorostyany, Deputy General Director of the Rosa Khutor resort for International Relations and Tourism, at the round table "Olympic Heritage: sports tourism as a tool for the development of destinations." The discussion took place at the campus of the Russian International Olympic University (RIOU) in Sochi. The participants of the round table assessed the socio-economic impact of sports tourism on the development of territories and the possibility of forming a growing tourist flow. In addition to experts from Russia, the event was attended by representatives of the United Kingdom, China, as well as RIOU students from 11 countries around the world.
- The development of the tourism industry today is explosive. According to the World Tourism Organization, until 2030, the travel industry will increase by an average of 17.5 percent per year, with sports tourism taking the largest share - 10 percent. Sochi, with its Olympic heritage, is a unique city. After the 2014 Winter Olympics, there are no "white elephants" in it, this is the rarest case when all Olympic facilities are used. At the same time, the development continues. A few days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave instructions on the development of the Sochi Olympic infrastructure and the construction of a training center for Russian football teams in the city. This will increase the flow of tourists," said the rector of the RMOU, Professor Lev Belousov.
A striking example of the effective use of the legacy of the 2014 Winter Olympics is the Rosa Khutor mountain resort. For the first time in the history of the Olympics, all competitions in alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding were held at the same venue. It was on the Rosa Khutor ski slopes that 30 sets of Olympic medals were awarded in 15 sports disciplines, almost a third of the total number of sets of medals (98), as well as 32 out of 76 sets of Paralympic medals.
