“According to the organizers of the event, the issue of climate change requires the adoption of urgent measures to reduce the risks of catastrophic and irreversible consequences of this process,” the message on the website of the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council says.

According to scientists, the rate of warming in the Russian Federation is approximately 2.5 times higher than the global average, and in the territory of the Russian Arctic - 3.7 times.

“The increase in air temperature is inevitably accompanied by a reduction in the area of sea ice, the degradation of permafrost in the northern regions causes significant damage to buildings and communications, and leads to flooding of infrastructure facilities. In addition, rising temperatures entail a high fire hazard in the northern regions,” the report says.

Leading experts, heads of relevant organizations and departments will discuss at the conference the adaptation of key sectors of the economy to new climatic conditions, as well as consider the experience of Russian regions.

Specialists from Russia, countries of near and far abroad, representatives of scientific and non-governmental organizations are invited to participate.

The conference on adaptation to climate change in the Arctic is organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation.
