A Tanzania envoy to China is on a mission to boost the number of Chinese tourists visiting the East African country and the region at large.
Ambassador Mbelwa Kairuki told members of Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) in the country’s northern tourism circuit capital of Arusha said that they should create an online booking platform specifically for promoting their tourism services in China, which has the world’s largest population at more than 1.4 billion people.
“The embassy is [also] liaising with different players to create the platform for the Chinese tourists to make reservations online,” he said.
“The embassy is, in addition, liaising with a marketing firm in Shanghai to promote the website on the Chinese social media platforms.”
Tanzania welcomed about 10,000 tourists from China in 2019, according to BusinessWeek East Africa.
Tourism earned Tanzania $2.43 billion in revenue in 2018 compared with $2.19 billion in 2017, according to data released by Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.
Tanzania’s tourism sector is expected to contribute 18.3% to the country’s GDP by 2020.
