The press service of the government of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug announced the results of the second stage of research on the walrus rookery at Cape Kharasavey. Experts have received several confirmations that mammals that annually come to the mouth of the Tiutei-Yakha River in autumn are a relatively isolated group.

"According to the satellite tracking data that scientists receive thanks to the installed sensors, it is known that most of the walruses do not leave the Baidaratskaya Bay, that is, they are resident in the Kara Sea," the report says.

Specialists also noted the unique feature of the Yamal walruses. The fact is that they come to Baidaratskaya Bay in a mixed composition. This is less typical for this species. Usually males settle separately from females with cubs.

"According to the results of detailed calculations based on drone images, in October 2022, the maximum number of individuals that came ashore at a time was found - 4,133. This is one and a half times more than in the previous year: then more than 2,000 heads were counted," the press release said. service.

This year, for the first time, experts have counted the number of the largest hardened males and babies who are still feeding on their mother's milk. Each category makes up about 6% of the total number of individuals. The rest of the mass is made up of young animals, including females.

The scientists also confirmed the relatively independent history of the Yamal walruses. Toxicological analysis suggests that the nature and composition of the accumulated persistent organic pollutants differs from those of the Pechora relatives. Experts studied the historical information about the presence of walruses on the territory of the peninsula. In their opinion, Yamal walruses survived several ice ages and a period of intensive fishing in the Barents Sea.

The group of walruses occupies a limited area of the water area, an area of about 50 thousand square kilometers. Currently, work is underway to create a specially protected area at the mouth of the Tiutei-Yakha River. This will ensure the safety of the Red Book population.
