The press service of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve reported that specialists have conducted a thorough survey of the future protected zone, which is currently under development, and the summer habitats of endangered wild reindeer. As part of their work, they assessed not only the population of the only large herd in Kamchatka but also the living conditions of these rare animals.

Aerial surveys conducted this year revealed that the total population of wild reindeer in the Kronotsky-Zhupanovsky herd is approximately 800 individuals. This represents a 14% increase compared to 2022. Specialists noted that thanks to conservation measures, the living conditions of these animals can be assessed as satisfactory.

A three-year project to conserve wild reindeer in Kamchatka was launched this year. It is being implemented with the support of the Charitable Foundation for the Preservation of the Ecological Systems of the Far East and Siberia. In cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, work continues on the creation of a protected zone for the Kronotsky Nature Reserve.

The report notes that the foundation has provided support to the reserve's patrol teams, equipping inspectors with modern equipment, communication devices, and surveillance tools. This has enabled them to conduct uninterrupted and coordinated patrols of remote and inaccessible areas under conditions that often pose risks to life and health.

Over the year, the staff of the protected area's security service carried out 7,431.9 km of foot patrols, 6,646.3 km by water transport, and 14,329.6 km by off-road vehicles. Patrols of the protected airspace using drones amounted to 47.24 hours, and by helicopters, 81.37 hours.

"These measures are aimed at identifying, preventing, and suppressing violations of the established protection regime, including the preservation of the only intact population of wild reindeer in Kamchatka. As part of the patrols, the maximum coverage of the territory of the future protected zone of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve and the summer concentration sites of endangered ungulates was achieved," the report says.

Specialists did not identify any cases of poaching, unauthorized campsites, or violations of fire safety rules in forests. They also did not note any illegal movement of vehicles by hunters, local residents, or tourists. However, one case of an administrative offense was initiated due to a helicopter flight that violated the protected airspace regime over the territory of the reserve.
