Secondary peatland rewetting will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, this work is being carried out as part of commitments given by signing the Paris Agreement, which provides for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Waterlogging of peat bogs is already being implemented in eight constituent entities of the Russian Federation, which report a significant reduction in peat fires and an improvement in the ecological situation, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported. Four regions are ready to join the project at the next stage of its implementation.
Experts noted that the peatland rewetting will be a significant contribution of the regions to the implementation of the national action plan for adaptation to climate change, adopted in December 2019 by the Government of the Russian Federation. The Russian-German project “Restoring peat bogs in Russia in order to prevent fires and mitigate climate change” is underway.
Russia has outlined a strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of a national contribution to the implementation of the Paris Agreement by including all sources, including those related to land tenure, which includes peatlands. Peat bogs have already been included in the "The National Report of the Russian Federation on the Inventory of the Anthropogenic Emissions and Sinks of Greenhouse Gases".
