Norilsk Nickel together with the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences presented the results of a large scientific expedition conducted in Transbaikalia. The purpose of the expedition was to study biodiversity in the territories where the company's operating enterprises are located.
Head of Research, Ph.D. RAS Victor Glupov in his speech stated that such large-scale research is not a common practice even in foreign countries.
“We faced, on the one hand, a simple task, on the other, a very difficult task. The fact is that the zone of impact of the enterprise on the environment is determined by many factors of natural origin, while some species of plants and animals adapt very quickly to new conditions and their reactions cannot be used as a criterion for assessing the negative impact. One of the main difficulties was in determining the exact criteria for evaluation, he said. - If we remove the presence of tailings from the analysis, then the level of impact of Norilsk Nickel enterprises is comparable to the impact of the city. There are no serious, global pollution as such in these territories. Yes, tailings make a negative effect, this should be taken into account in case of expansion of the plant. We hope that the results of our research will be taken into account in recultivation. Here it is important to approach comprehensively and responsibly so that these works are effective.”
The research took place in several stages at different times of the year.
