The press service of Mospriroda announced the creation of a map of the habitat of snakes in the natural areas of the capital and recalled the rules of conduct when meeting with these reptiles.
The report notes that three types of snakes can be found in Moscow: the common snake, the common copperhead and the common viper. All of them are listed in the Red Book of the capital.
In recent years, the common has already been seen in 15 natural areas, including in the natural and historical parks "Tushinsky", "Moskvoretsky", the natural monument "Vashutinsky mesotrophic swamp in the Molzhaninovsky area", the reserves "Valley of the Setun River", "Altufevsky", "Northern", "Lianozovsky", "Troparevsky" and "Teply Stan".
Snakes prefer to live in damp and shady places. They are safe for people. On the sides of the head, the snake may have characteristic bright yellow spots. They are great swimmers and love to be near water bodies. These snakes feed on frogs, mice and, very rarely, fish.
The report notes that the copperhead and the viper have not been recorded by Mospriroda specialists over the past five years.
Vipers are poisonous, but in most cases their venom is not fatal to humans. You can recognize this snake by the zigzag pattern of dark diamonds along the back. Vipers often hide under the roots of trees and feed mainly on mouse-like rodents.
Copperheads, like snakes, are safe for people. You can identify it by the dark stripe near the eyes. The body is usually covered with spots. This species lives on sunny edges and feeds on lizards.
“Almost no snake will be the first to attack a person and in most cases will simply try to crawl away from danger. But it’s still better to follow certain rules if you went to a natural area,” the message says.
In particular, experts recommend choosing high and tight shoes for walking. In addition, to minimize the risk of meeting a snake, you need to look under your feet so as not to accidentally step on it.
When meeting with a snake, it should not be touched. It is also not recommended to make sudden movements or scare her. Experts advise to slowly move away from the reptile and call the citywide hotline if the snake is seen in the yard or indoors.
The Association of Tour Operators of Russia attributes this to affordable prices, the opening of year-round facilities, and the possibility of early booking accommodation
