The press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources near Moscow announced the discovery of a new protected species on the territory of the Lokhin Ostrov natural monument. Biologists met pintail duck. The population of this bird in the Moscow region is on the verge of extinction.
Earlier, during surveys on the territory of Lokhina Ostrov, a red-footed falcon was seen. This rare bird is listed in the Red Books of Russia and the Moscow region.
"The pintail population has been declining catastrophically since the 1990s, not only in the Moscow region, but also in adjacent regions. The fact of the appearance of a bird in the Krasnogorsk PA gives hope for a gradual recovery of the population," the report says.
The natural monument "Lohin Island" is a unique natural complex of alluvial and ancient alluvial plains, which includes floodplain lands and the basin of the relict lake Glukhaya Yama. This is the main reason for the appearance of the pintail here, which nests precisely in floodplain lands, little subject to anthropogenic impact.
On the territory of Lokhina Island, 130 species of vertebrates have been confirmed to inhabit, which is about a third of the total species diversity of the Moscow Region.
