Residents and guests of the Indian capital on holidays are unlikely to relax. A shocking poll conducted in New Delhi by the Campaign Against Drink Driving (CADD) showed that in most cases, a drunk driver drives a taxi in which they return home from parties.
“A poll of taxi drivers was carried out from September 10 to December 10 to check how metropolitan transport companies are ready to provide a safe ride and an alternative to drunk driving,” said road expert and CADD founder Prince Singhal. “This is especially true during the winter holidays when people go to visit each other, often have a drink and then prefer to return home by taxi so as not to risk driving and break the rules.»
The study was conducted in 50 well-known public places in Delhi, including airports, railway stations, metro stations, shopping centers, office complexes and university districts between 2p.m and 1a.m. About 62% of respondents admitted that they consume alcohol in their vehicles, and 27% said they regularly take orders in a very intoxicated state.
Talking about the reasons for such a blatant disregard for the passenger’s own safety and life, the drivers admitted that they were forced to drink on a long working day, during which they often had to wait a long time for customers. At the same time, transport companies and taxis themselves practically ignore the bad habits of employees and do not consider it necessary to control their condition. More than 90 percent of taxi drivers have never been tested by their employers while drunk driving, the study said.
And finally, the drunkards are practically not interested in the police either - as the checks showed, taxi drivers, if at all prosecuted, were usually accused of speeding, driving a red light and overtaking, but very rarely for driving while intoxicated.
