In Russia, over 50 percent of snow leopards live in the Altai Republic, said Denis Malikov, director of the Sailyugemsky National Park.
He spoke about the results of the snow leopard count in the region in 2023 at a meeting of the section of experts on the conservation and restoration of the snow leopard of the working group on the conservation and restoration of certain rare and endangered wildlife in Russia.
“In the course of the work, the scientists of the Saylyugemsky National Park covered 280 kilometers of high-altitude routes, checked 116 photo and video cameras, analyzed 57,969 frames, 538 of them with a snow leopard,” Malikov said in a message on the website of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources.
According to the results of the research, experts came to the conclusion that 43-44 individuals of the snow leopard live in the Altai Republic - this is more than 50 percent of the total number of the species in the country.
In addition, six individuals live in Buryatia, 25 in Tyva, and nine in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
