The republic will be allocated a subsidy from the federal budget for the implementation of activities of the federal project "Conservation of Lake Baikal". The corresponding decree was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources said.
“The financing will be directed to the reconstruction of one of the largest municipal infrastructure facilities in the region - the right-bank treatment facilities of the Ulan-Ude sewerage system. They purify domestic and industrial wastewater from residential buildings and city enterprises. After the reconstruction, the capacity of the facilities will increase to 130 thousand cubic meters of wastewater per day, and the quality of treatment will increase, " the department said.
As noted in the ministry, this will reduce the volume of pollution entering Baikal and improve the environmental situation in the region.
"Conservation of Lake Baikal" is one of the federal projects included in the national project "Ecology", which started in 2019.
By the end of 2024, it is planned to reduce from 448.9 hectares to zero the area of territories exposed to high pollution and affecting the lake. Over the past three years, 143 hectares of contaminated coastal areas have already been cleared.
As part of the Baikal conservation project, the sixth stage of reconstruction of sewage treatment facilities on the right bank of Irkutsk is nearing completion. As noted in the Ministry of Natural Resources, thanks to this, the capacity of the treatment facilities will be 220 thousand cubic meters per day.
