From June to August 2023, the Russian Railways holding transported more than 14 thousand pets unaccompanied by their owners on long-distance trains. This is a third more than in the summer months of last year. This is reported on the company's website.
“Traditionally, animals were most often sent from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Samara. The record holders for the duration of the trip were hamsters and a turtle, which were delivered from Moscow to Vladivostok. It seems that during the holiday season, some owners decided to give their pets a vacation and sent them to southern resorts: dogs, cats and parrots to Adler, guinea pigs and fish to Sochi, chinchillas to Anapa,” the report says.
The service for transporting pets without their owners became available at the end of 2018. Since then, more than 150 thousand relevant documents have been issued.
Unaccompanied by their owners, pets are transported in the luggage compartment of the staff cars of long-distance trains of JSC FPC, which run within the country. Only domesticated animals are allowed for such transportation. A guide looks after them along the way.
You can arrange transportation at specialized baggage counters.
