The Maldives received more than 5,100 tourists on 22 Feb 2021, the highest daily record yet in 2021. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, around 5,000 tourists arrived here and 3,000 this year.
The island country received 160,000 tourists between January 1 and February 20 this year, who were mainly from India, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.The tourism ministry aims to attract a total of 1.5 million tourists to the country by the end of this year.
India has emerged as the number-one top source market for tourist arrivals in the Maldives so far in 2021, overtaking the position previously held by Russia.
The statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism indicate that as of 17th February 2021, Maldives welcomed 32,970 arrivals from India followed by 32,019 arrivals from Russia this year. Ukraine took the third position with 10,178 tourist arrivals. The remaining top source markets include Kazakhstan, Romania, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Czech Republic and the USA.
Maldives reopened borders for all international travellers on 15th July 2020, after temporarily closing the borders to curb the spread of COVID-19, While tourists are not required to quarantine upon arrival, tourists are required to submit an online health declaration form within 24 hours before departure and are required to produce a negative COVID-19 PCR test result conducted within 96 hours before departure.
Right now, the Maldives is reportedly one of the most ideal and safest locations for travellers as the islands are geographically blessed by their isolated nature.
