All tourism sectors in Guadeloupe, which is an overseas department of France, are registering a sharp increase in bookings after president Emmanuel Macron announced in late november the gradual lifting of restrictive measures in the region in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The jump in demand has been noted on the reservation of rooms in hotels and cottages as well as rental cars.
For several months, the occupancy rate of the tourist industry in Guadeloupe, whose population is slightly more than 390,000, was only 20%.
After the lifting of anti-pandemic restrictions, the department's authorities expect up to 2,000 tourists to arrive in Guadeloupe every day for the New Year holidays.
