The World Wildlife Fund (WWF-Russia) and JSC Onega LDK signed an agreement following which ecologically valuable forests in the Arkhangelsk region with a total area of about 600,000 hectares will remain untouched, as per WWF press service.
Onega LDK, part of the Segezha Group, will voluntarily preserve high conservation value forests on its lease area in the Onega, Severodvinsky and Priozernoye forestries of the Arkhangelsk region.
The total area of the forest areas where forestry activities will be limited amounts to about 600,000 hectares, of which more than 150,000 hectares will be completely preserved.
This territory is inhabited by rare species of animals and plants. The forests in the territory of the lease of "Onega LDK" are also called by scientists intact forest areas - forest areas untouched by men.
They are important not only from an environmental point of view, but also from a social and economic point of view. That is why it is necessary to ensure a balance between their possible development and the mandatory preservation of their social and environmental functions.
