The obovate peony is very valuable for breeding, has a limited distribution area and needs to be protected.
Employees of the scientific department of the Kurilsky Reserve discovered a small population of wild peony in September this year in a forest meadow on the territory of the Small Kuriles federal nature reserve. They were able to assess the state of the population and describe it in detail. Now a scientific article is being prepared for publication.
According to the literature data, the obovate peony was recorded in a similar place only once, in 1962. Subsequently, it was recorded on the island three more times: in 1967 on Mount Shikotan, in 1968 on the slope of the hill on the road near the Bay of the World's End, in 1981 in the Bay of Crab.
The obovate peony is listed in the Red Books of Russia and the Sakhalin Region. This plant has high decorative and medicinal qualities, and is also valuable for breeding.
Modern research in the field of pion taxonomy shows that the obovate peony is a species that grows only in the Russian Far East, China, Korea and Japan.
