Employees of the Wrangel Island Nature Reserve in Chukotka are preparing to register polar bear dens, which will tentatively start in early March. The turn of winter and spring is the time to prepare specialists of protected areas for the new field season.
This was announced on its website by the Roszapovedcenter of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia.
"During the month, a group of specialists will carry out ground accounting of dens – a visual inspection of the model site. If necessary, scientists will also use unmanned aerial vehicles. For example, if a den or tracks leading somewhere are found with binoculars, drones are launched over the research site. If the employees of the protected area receive evidence that the den is empty, they can go up there on snowshoes and take measurements," the agency quotes Ulyana Babiy, head of the scientific department of the Wrangel Island Reserve.

The work on the protection and study of the polar bear is currently under special state control. The species is included in the list of 13 priority wildlife sites of the federal project "Conservation of biological diversity and development of ecological tourism" of the national project "Ecology". In 2022, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation approved a Strategy for the conservation of the polar bear in the Russian Federation until 2030.
