The press service of the "Kuril" nature reserve reported that in June there were a large number of meetings of bears with employees of the protection department and visitors to natural areas.
"Now the bears are mating or bear rutting. Because of this, the bears are actively moving in search of a partner. Males move to the smell of females, mark their territory, including "itching" on trees, leaving their smell on them, " says message.
The staff of the reserve note that recently there has been a positive trend in the growth of the number of bears. According to the results of last year's accounting, the number of bears in the "Kuril" reserve amounted to 89 individuals. However, it will be possible to judge a significant increase in the number of individuals this year only based on the results of the autumn count.
In the reserve, bears can often be found on the coast, where they come to feed. Waves wash ashore shellfish, fish, bodies of marine mammals.
The staff of the reserve urge residents and guests of Kunashir not to feed the bears, which sometimes go to the roads. Lured animals often die under the wheels of cars, so a person should not be associated with bears with food.
In addition, food and personal belongings should not be left in nature. An abandoned backpack with food can provoke predators to steal.
