Emirates is set to suspend flights to and from Nigeria starting 1 September 2022 as it is struggling to repatriate funds from the West African country.
The airline said efforts to initiate dialogue with the relevant authorities for their urgent intervention to help find a viable solution have failed.
“Therefore, Emirates has taken the difficult decision to suspend all flights to and from Nigeria, effective 01 September 2022, to limit further losses and impact on our operational costs that continue to accumulate in the market,” it said in a statement.
“…we will be working to help impacted customers make alternative travel arrangements wherever possible.”
However, Emirates said it would re‑evaluate its decision should there be any positive developments in the coming days regarding its blocked funds.
The airline said it remains keen to serve Nigeria.
Emirates provide much-needed connectivity for Nigerian travellers, providing access to trade and tourism opportunities to Dubai and over 130 destinations.
The International Air Transport Association said last June that Nigeria had been withholding $450 million in revenue that belongs to international carriers operating in the country.
The West African country is limiting access to foreign currency for imports and for investors trying to repatriate their profits as a result of a shortage of dollars, according to Reuters.
